"RISK WARNING: YOUR CAPITAL MIGHT BE AT RISK"

"CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Between 74-89% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money."

Online trading has given anyone who has a computer the ability to invest in the market. Get an overview of how stocks and the stock market works. Stocks in companies that re-invest their profits are growth stocks. Brokers buy and sell stocks through an exchange, charging a commission to do so. A broker is simply a person who is licensed to trade stocks through the exchange. A broker can be on the trading floor or can make trades by phone or electronically.

Index funds can be mutual funds or ETFs (exchange-traded funds) that track an index, such as the S&P 500 Index. The term "mutual funds" typically refers to actively managed funds that employ stock pickers with the goal of beating the market's performance. The types of funds are summarized in the table below. Top Dividend Paying Mutual Funds. ... Vanguard High Dividend Yield Index Fund (VHDYX): VHDYX is an index fund that attempts to replicate the performance of the FTSE High Dividend Yield Index. This index contains stocks of companies, which usually pay higher than expected, or greater than average, dividends.

They are generally cheaper than their mutual fund sibling with an average expense ratio of 0.21% in 2017 versus 0.59% for mutual funds, according to Investment Company Institute (ICI) research. They are generally more passive and track an index rather than actively trading like a mutual fund. Unlike bond interest, stock dividends are not guaranteed. However, many companies choose to pay annual cash dividends to reward long-term shareholders and encourage new investors. A mutual fund that invests in dividend stocks, therefore, passes along those earnings to its shareholders each year.

The S&P 500 index includes dividends. As of December 2017, the dividend yield for the S&P 500 was 1.85%. This is below the historical average of 4.41% and close to the all-time low of 1.11% in August 2000. In the first half of the 20th century, dividends tended to grow at a similar rate as the stock market. Both are very low cost funds which invest in a broad index so there really isn't much difference between the two. The primary differences is that an ETF can be traded throughout the day like a stock, whereas a mutual fund can only be bought or sold at the end of the day's Net Asset Value (NAV).
