To day trade US stocks, you need to maintain an account balance of $25,000 or more. Start with at least $30,000 if you plan to make more than 4 day trades per trading week. 4 day trades or more per week gives you “day trader status” and you're subject to the $25,000 minimum account balance. Assume a day trading strategy where the stop loss is $0.04 and your target is $0.06. The account balance is $30,000, so the maximum risk per trade is $300. ... Here's how much you can make day trading stocks: 55 trades were profitable: 55 x $0.06 x 7500 shares = $24,750.

Ninety-two percent of day traders trying to scalp loose money. Only eight percent are successful. Out of the eight percent, only two percent of the day trading public make money on a consistent basis. Why do 92 percent of day traders fail and what makes eight percent successful? But trading penny stocks is also a good way to lose money. So penny-stock trading thrives. With a relatively small investment you can make a nice return if — and this is a big if — the trade works out. For example, say you buy 10,000 shares of a $.30 stock for $3,000.

Individual traders and investors pay taxes on capital gains. Generally speaking, if you held the position less than a year (365 days), that would be considered a short-term capital gain, which is taxed at the same rate as ordinary income. Day traders usually buy on borrowed money, hoping that they will reap higher profits through leverage, but running the risk of higher losses too. While day trading is neither illegal nor is it unethical, it can be highly risky.

A pattern day trader is subject to special rules. The main rule is that in order to engage in pattern day trading you must maintain an equity balance of at least $25,000 in a margin account. The required minimum equity must be in the account prior to any daytrading activities. Therefore, with a decent stock day trading strategy, and $30,000 (leveraged at 4:1), you can make roughly: $7,500 – $2000 = $5,500/month or about a 18% monthly return. Remember, you are actually utilizing about $100,000 to $120,000 in buying power on each trade (not just $30,000).

So you can imagine their shock when I tell them that it is possible to make a living trading stocks — but is it probable — that is the real question. Every year, novice investors, buoyed by their paper trading success, take the leap of faith and decide that they are going to earn their living from the stock market.
