The 'momentum' of a market is the rate of acceleration of its price or volume. As an oscillator it helps identify trend lines as it measures the rate at which the price moves up or down. Candlestick patterns may show signs of price direction and momentum. Momentum trader is a term for a day trader who uses a strategy based on trying to predict the trends in market prices. There are two types: An event-based momentum trader is a day trader who makes trading decisions based on market volatility resulting from news or incidents happening in the course of a trading day.

Momentum investing is a system of buying stocks or other securities that have had high returns over the past three to twelve months, and selling those that have had poor returns over the same period. Momentum investing is an investment strategy that aims to capitalize on the continuance of existing trends in the market. To participate in momentum investing, a trader takes a long position in an asset that has shown an upward trending price, or the trader short-sells a security that has been in a downtrend.

To day trade US stocks, you need to maintain an account balance of $25,000 or more. Start with at least $30,000 if you plan to make more than 4 day trades per trading week. 4 day trades or more per week gives you “day trader status” and you're subject to the $25,000 minimum account balance.
