Volume analysis is the examination of the number of shares or contracts of a security that have been traded in a given time period. By analyzing trends in volume in conjunction with price movements, investors can determine the significance of changes in a security's price. Trading volume, or volume, is the number of shares or contracts that indicates the overall activity of a security or market for a given period. Trading volume can help an investor identify momentum in a stock and confirm a trend. If trading volume increases, prices generally move in the same direction.


In the context of a single stock trading on a stock exchange, the volume is commonly reported as the number of shares that changed hands during a given day.
