Trend trading is a trading strategy that attempts to capture gains through the analysis of a security's momentum in a particular direction. Traders use the MACD for determining trend direction, momentum and potential reversals. It is used to confirm trades based on other strategies, but it also provides its own trade signals. Figure 1 shows the MACD applied to a daily chart of Apple (AAPL) stock. Two lines compose the MACD: the MACD line and Signal line. The stock market, just like the price of individual stocks, tends to trend. Indices are prone to move in one general direction or another, until something causes that direction to change. Uptrends are characterized by prices making higher highs and higher lows.

Trend following or trend trading is a trading strategy according to which one should buy an asset when its price trend goes up, and sell when its trend goes down, expecting price movements to continue. Trend following is used by commodity trading advisors (CTAs) as the predominant strategy of technical traders. The signal line is a 9-day EMA of the MACD Line. As a moving average of the indicator, it trails the MACD and makes it easier to spot MACD turns. A bullish crossover occurs when the MACD turns up and crosses above the signal line. A bearish crossover occurs when the MACD turns down and crosses below the signal line.
