A triangle is formed when the resistance line and the support line converge to form the triangle point that shows a general direction in the stock's price movement. There are three types of triangles: symmetrical, ascending, and descending. Symmetrical: The symmetrical triangle points sideways. Or in the case of the ascending/descending triangle pattern, one trendline is horizontal. A wedge pattern is a type of ... I've stumbled upon several forum posts and overheard some instructors' comments that have mislabeled other patterns (usually triangles or pennants) as wedges. I recently received a question from one of the attendees of yesterday's webinar (recording available here). I was reviewing the charts in our DP Chart Gallery as well as symbol requests and often referred to ascending triangle patterns and ascending wedge patterns. Triangles and pennants look the same, but their timeframes and expectations are different. Pennants are short-term patterns that form after a steep advance or sharp decline. Pennants typically extend 1-3 weeks, after which a continuation of the prior move is expected. Anything longer is probably a triangle. Like triangles and rectangles, pennants and wedges are continuation patterns. They look like triangles, but much smaller. Pennants are sideways and horizontal, but wedges are either ascending or descending. This is the main difference they have. How to Trade the Trendlines, Head and Shoulders, Triangles, Double Tops and Bottoms, Flags, Pennants, Wedges. There are three kinds of triangles: Ascending, Descending and Symmetrical: Symmetrical, Ascending and Descending Triangle Chart Patterns. Bullishe Continuation Patterns. Bullish flag; Bullish pennant; Bullish rectangle; Bullish Falling Wedge; Ascending triangle; Bullish symmetrical triangle. Bearishe Continuation Patterns. Bearish flag; Bearish pennant; Bearish rectangle; Bearish Rising Wedge; Descending triangle; Bearish Symmetrical Triangle. The triangle can be a continuation or a reversal pattern. Although, more often it is a continuation pattern. There are three types of triangles: symmetric, ascending, and descending. For trading purposes they are all the same, the just look different. A triangle forms when the price action narrows over several price swings. In contrast, ascending triangles have a horizontal upper trend line, predicting a potential breakout higher, and descending triangles have a horizontal lower trend line, predicting a potential breakdown lower. Symmetrical triangles are also similar to pennants and flags in some ways, but pennants have upward sloping trend. Symmetrical Triangle. Symmetrical triangles form with lower highs and higher lows. Because of their shape, they can act as either a continuation or a reversal pattern. This will be signaled by the breakout. An upward breakout is a bullish signal, while a downward breakout is bearish. But unlike wedges, their trend lines run parallel. Bearish flags are comprised of higher tops and higher bottoms. "Bear" flags also have a tendency to slope against the trend. Their trend lines run parallel as well. Chart patterns play a big role in technical analysis. Stock chart patterns help identify trends and reversals and trigger buy and sell signals for traders. These can take the shape of symmetrical, ascending and descending triangles. Occasionally, rectangles also emerge on the RSI chart. Less frequently, RSI will form head and shoulder formations, pennants and wedges. On the technical analysis chart, a wedge pattern is a market trend commonly found in traded assets (stocks, bonds, futures, etc.). The pattern is characterized by a contracting range in prices coupled with an upward trend in prices (known as a rising wedge) or a downward trend in prices (known as a falling wedge).
